SATURN    2000     Opposition: November 19th  Mag: -0.2

January 19th

The first images of the year show the rings now more fully opened and the Cassini division evident between Ring  "A" and  Ring "B".

November 17th

Rings now wide open. As the planet is within a few days of oppostion there no longer appears the shadow of the globe on the rings ( as appears in the image above). The cassini division could be traced right around the rings. This is a 0.8 sec exposure with SX CCD  and infrared pass filter + 50 cm f/4 stopped down to 20 cm.

November 24th

Saturn is now at opposition and this 0.8 sec exposure with the SXF  Colour  CCD shows up the pale autumnal colours of the planet.
Note the brighter equatorial  zone which contrasts with the darker less well-illuminated polar region.

January 6th 2001
